Patent Office Help and Advice - Get the Discovery Pack
The Patent Office is responsible for managing all the Intellectual Property registrations in the UK. Another name for the Patent Office is the Intellectual Property Office or IPO.

It issues Patents, Registered Designs, and Trade Marks.

To protect your idea or invention you need to apply to the Patent Office for one of more of these things. Patents protect how things work, Registered Designs protect what they look like and Trade Marks protect what they are called. The other form of protection is Copyright but that doesn't need to be registered as it is an automatic right in the UK.

To find out more about the different types of protection please see the Intellectual Property page.

We have a number of Services that can help you with preparing your ideas and submitting them. First we have the Enterprise Service which is free to join. It gives you things like Confidentiality Agreements that you will need to protect your idea if you want to talk to anyone else about it. We can explain what forms you need and how to fill them in.

Just click the Free Pack button above to register. It is free to join.

If you want to get a Patent or are considering spending money, for example on developing a prototype, then you should get a Patent Search done using our Patent Search Service as part of our Discovery Service. This will tell you whether your idea really is new and whether you are likely to be able to get a patent.

If you would like more technical and commercial help then submit an idea to the Discovery Service . You are automatically enrolled in the Advice Service.

The Discovery Service delivers a Patent Search and a bound report about your idea as well as the Technical help of the Advice Service. Just click the Inventor Services button above to get a pack.
