The is the second invention from David Elliott that we have helped take to market. He first approached us for help with his clever Direct Air Drying system, which our Intellectual Property  team helped to protect. Find out more in our Success Centre

The Extendable Bar-Clamp is a clever DIY tool that performs large and small clamp jobs. It can clamp up to 30.5cm in its standard form. Lock in the unique extender bar and this increases to a mighty 1.64m! The clamp has a release system and trigger-gripper function to make clamping quick and easy.

When David originally sent the Bar-Clamp to us for assessment, the first step was to establish if it really was a new idea, or if it had already been protected by someone else. We do this through our Intellectual Property search, which is included within our Inventor and Premier Inventor Services.

Our Intellectual Property team conducted an extensive search and found that the idea was novel and had good scope for protection. We then considered it for market need and what we call 'product quality'. Satisfied of its commercial potential we offered David an agreement to help with seeking a route-to-market.

We presented the invention to companies within our Industrial Collaborator Network to gauge commercial interest. One of our closest partners snapped up the idea through a licensing agreement in 2006.
