New drying invention sent to Cumbria to help flood victims

A revolutionary drying invention, backed by Trevor Baylis Brands (TBB), is being sent to Workington, Cumbria, where equipment is being gathered by a specialist flood restoration company.

Brothers David and Jack Elliot's Direct Air Dryer (DAD) will be hired out by Supply UK's specialist operation, called Force 3, to flood restoration companies so they can dry out properties as quickly as possible and help flood victims return their homes faster .

As well as helping Cumbrian flood victims, the brothers believe their invention could cut 20% off the predicted £100 million clean-up costs that insurers may have to pay out.

David explained: “If people can move back into their homes quicker, it saves insurers money. Also, the environmental, energy, health and safety and even noise reduction benefits are remarkable. Then there are the social benefits from people not having to spend months in caravans or temporary accommodation. The DAD can also help businesses get up and running more quickly after flood or water damage and staff can even continue working while the drying process is taking place.”

The DAD, which works by creating ideal drying conditions using a special type of inflatable mattress with small holes in it, was used during the recent major flooding in Hull. The system dried affected properties in just 21 days compared to several months using normal methods. The other advantage with DAD is that only a small number of floorboards have to be removed in each room and the system can also dry plaster.

Companies that are reaping the benefits of using Direct Air Dryers include fire and flood restoration company Belfor and leading restoration and specialist cleaning company Rainbow International.

The Direct Air Dryers team has been working with Belfor's Technical Development Manager, John Thompson, who has been testing the DAD. John said: “The DAD is one of the best advances in drying in recent years. In a range of tests, the DAD with heat reduces drying times by around 60 per cent. We have invested in a number of DADs and will be using them for different drying applications so we can give our customers the best possible service.”

John Mussell, of Rainbow International's Skelmersdale branch, added: “The DAD has made an amazing difference to the service we can offer to customers. We are now using the equipment every day and it's allowing us to deal with more drying situations than before as less equipment is needed and fewer staff. It's not only great for our customers, but also in terms of the income we can generate for Rainbow International by using DADs.”

With the help of TBB plc, David and Jack have a full UK patent for their product and have just been granted European Patent to prevent other companies from copying or distributing the DAD. The pair see no end to the DAD's uses – from grain drying, to sports pitches and storage areas that need to be kept dry, to the possible use in the medical field for maintaining the temperature of someone with a fever in a war theatre situation.

The DAD can be hired, made to any size and delivered anywhere in the UK. For more information go to www.directairdryers.co.uk or telephone 05601 290239 or email contact@directairdryers.com
